Surf’s Up In Israel?

By Rabbi Barney Kasdan

With the recent Arab Spring and shaking in the Middle East, it might be hard to think of another side of Israel.  But Israel is a complex mixture of over 6 million Jews, 2 million Arabs and a mixture of various Christians trying to live a somewhat normal life.  There are families to attend to, jobs to be met and (yes!) waves to be caught.  This connection between the Israel of the Bible and the modern state has come together in a unique movie produced by the Christian surf ministry, “Walking on Water” founded by former pro-surfer Bryan Jennings.  Over the last few years, some of the Christian pro-surfers have developed a relationship with some of the Israeli pro-surfers living in that ancient land.  What started with these friendships, developed into a vision for the new movie “Promised Land” which takes a look at Israel through the eyes of surfers.   Film Producer Todd Morehead knew that there was an important story to be told at this critical time.  The movie recounts the friendship especially between Todd and an Israeli surfboard shaper by the name of Hani.  In the process we can see the special relationship between these two who love  the ocean yet come from very different religious backgrounds.  Yet, it is their common connection in surfing as well as the spiritual connection to the Scriptures that bring them (and many others in the movie) to appreciate their close ties.  The movie also features many special guests from Israeli surfers to 91-year old “Doc” Paskowitz to even a surfing messianic rabbi (yours truly).  “Promised Land” has a special focus on 3-time world champion surfer, Tom Curren, and his first time encounter with the Holy Land.  And by the way, we scored some great waves!   The movie premiered last January in Israel playing in five different theaters and has been well received by hundreds of Israelis including the mayor of the city of Ashdod.  Since the movie is also a documentary on the history of Israel, “Promised Land” has been favorably viewed by a diverse group of people:  not just surfers but people from various backgrounds; Israelis, Christians, American Jews, non-religious.  Various religious (and non-religious) views are presented which makes the movie a great tool for understanding others.  People may get a different perspective on the Middle East as the Israelis share their personal stories as well.  It is a blessing to see the appreciation and respect between Christians and Jews.  History has not always been that way.  Of course the Scriptures remind us that every Christian owes a debt of gratitude to the Jewish people for the spiritual blessings that came through Abraham all the way to Yeshua as the Messiah (Romans 15:27).  Maybe that is why the movie has played to sold out audiences since it made its USA premiere the first week of February.  Messianic Jews will appreciate the fact that we are included in the discussion about the importance of Israel and even our perspective on Yeshua as the Messiah.   “Promised Land” is scheduled to show at Horizon Church Rancho Santa Fe on March 4 and at the La Jolla Museum of Contemporary Art with two shows on March 10 and at other locations soon.   For tickets and more information, go to  Invite everyone (especially your Jewish friends) to see this educational and beautifully done movie.
